Surathkal: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal celebrated Teachers’ Day in a unique way by two thought-provoking panel discussions involving both faculty and students.
The first panel titled “Jobs in 2030 – Core or Computer Engineering?” featured Dr. Pavan Pandit (Mechanical Engineering) and Ms. Khushi Singh (Mining Engineering student), who supported core engineering, and Dr. Vamshi (Information Technology) and Mr. Arnav Mirandda (IT student), who supported computer engineering. The first side claimed that everything real in the world is built by core engineers, and these jobs will always remain relevant. The second side debated that even core engineers are now using computer software to design and manufacture various products, and that CS/IT engineers are improving the quality and productivity in all industries.
The second panel, “AI in 2030 – Will It Replace Teachers?” featured Dr. Sabiha Alam Choudhury (Humanities, Social Sciences & Management) and Mr. Jonathan James (Chemical Engineering student), who argued that teachers provide valuable emotional support, inspiration and mentoring to students, which is not possible by inanimate AI. The opposing team included Dr. Amareshwararao Kavuri (Electronics & Communication Engineering) and Ms. Aditi Pandey (IT student), who emphasised that AI can provide personalized education – anytime, anywhere and at any pace for a large number of students, which is not possible by human teachers.
Director Prof. B. Ravi moderated both panels and concluded by saying that the future jobs will require both domain (core engineering) knowledge and computer skills. Teachers will be indispensable, but will need to equip themselves with AI tools to enhance the learning experience of students, as well as better retention, application and updation of the knowledge gained in the college.
Both sessions witnessed active participation and questions from the audience, which included about 300 faculty, students and staff. Prof. G.S. Dwarakish, Dean (Academic Programs), who compered as well as concluded the event, highlighted the role and importance of teachers in shaping the new generations of graduates for contributing to national development.
