Mangalore: Just like science, there is truth in cultural life too. By overcoming the corruption among artists and audiences, we should protect the sanctity and truth of culture and art forms, said Alva’s Foundation Chairman Dr. Mohan Alva.
Addressing the audience after releasing the Cultural Policy of Mangalore University on the occasion of Dr. P. Dayananda Pai and Sathish Pai Yakshagana Centre Decennial awards and Yakshamangala awarding ceremony held at Mangala Auditorium here on Saturday, he opined that having both sports and cultural policies of it’s own is the pride of Mangalore University. “These two are like the eyes of the organization,” he added.
“It is our responsibility to turn children as cultural asset of the country. We can achieve only through such policies,” he opined. Sri Sachchidananda Bharathi Swamiji of Edneer Math said, “As long as educational institutions support art culture, it can be passed on to the next generation. Mangalore University, which has formulated a cultural policy for this, can be a model for other institutions,” he said.
In his presidential address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya said that Yakshagana centre is imparting academic discipline to Yakshagana and conveying the message that Yakshagana is ever relevant. The new National Education Policy stresses on comprehensive education for a student. Cultural policy will help to achieve this. Retired English professor, and a member of cultural policy formulation committee Prof. Ravi Shankar said that the policy is inspired by the achievements of individuals and institutions.

Senior Yakshagana artists Puttige Raghurama Holla, Dinesh Ammannaya, Subrahmanya Dhareshwar, Kuriya Ganapathy Bhat, Padyana Shankaranarayan Bhat, Harinarayana Baipadithaya, Aruva Koragappa Shetty, Shivaram Jogi, Kumble Sridhara Rao, Argodu Mohan Das Shenoy, Petri Madhava Naika, Balkooru Krishna Yaji, Mukhyaprana Kinnigoli, Ubaradka Umesh Shetty, Pookala Lakshminarayan Bhat, Dr. Uppangala Shankaranarayan Bhat, Dr. Chandrashekhara Damle received Dashamanothsava award.
Senior artists Pundarikaksha Upadhyay and Dayananda Nagooru received the Yakshamangala Award for the year 2021-22. Dr. D. Sadashiva Bhatta won the ‘Yakshamangala Kriti’ Award for his 'Shrikrishna Charita' Yakshagana epic. Meanwhile, Prof. Padekallu Vishnu Bhatta, Prof. M.L. Samaga and Dr. Dhananjaya Kumble were also felicitated for their contribution to the centre. A Yakshagana performance of 'Mahishavadhe' was performed by the senior artists of the Yakshamangala troupe.
Director of Yakshagana Study Center Prof. Sripati Kalluraya in his introductory note said that in the last 13 years about 13 books have been printed and more than 100 promotional lectures have been carried out. Besides, a lot of dance, painting, speaking, workshops and reviews have been conducted. Everything is a part of the functioning of the university, he said.
Yakshagana scholar Prof. M.L. Samaga, Prof. Padekallu Vishnu Bhatta and Dr. Ganaraja Kumble were also present. Mangalore University Registrar Dr. Kishore Kumar CK proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Dhananjaya Kumble and M.Com student Sridevi mastered the ceremony.
Foundation laid, books released
Dr. M. Mohan Alva, President of Alva’s Foundation, who inaugurated the program, also released the ambitious cultural policy of Mangalore University. Meanwhile, he laid the foundation stone for the Yakshagana stage. In addition guests released two books- ``Yakshahasya'' and Shediguppe Vasudeva Bhatta's ``Lavanya Lakshmi Mantharopakhyana''.
