Bengaluru: JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), one of the top-ranked private universities in India, hosted the 2nd International Level Conference on Literature, Society & Global Media by bringing together leading experts, researchers, educators, and industry professionals to explore research and innovations that will further drive the future of literature, society, and global media in education.
Prof. B K Ravi, Vice Chancellor, Koppal University, stated, “The rise of digital media has reformed the communication dynamics of India. Besides, regional channels have also allowed local communities to present their own stories in their native languages.” Further he stated, “The media interface has ensured literature is not just confined to the pages but has extended to visual representation for a wider audience.”
Prof. George Alfred James, Emeritus, First Bhagwan Adinath Chair, Department of Philosophy & Religion, University of North Texas, in his keynote, underscored the importance of how literature reflects societal changes & adapts to the evolving media landscape, stating, “Today the public has access to multiple news outlets, particularly in America and here, they can choose where they get the information and disinformation.” Commenting on the environmental issues, he added, “In India, I have noticed that media is not giving visibility to environmental issues as much as world media. People quote Chipko movement in western world, unfortunately, the concern here is not encouraging. The Carbon emission is at the level where it is very dangerous to the existence of the world. We all need to think about it. Especially, when media has a crucial role to play.”
Ms. Ayesha Khanum, Chairperson of Karnataka Madyama Academy stated, “Journalism is literature in a hurry and media acts as the voice of society.” She further reflected on changing perceptions of India in global media, “India in Western media has evolved over the years, shifting from stereotypes to recognizing India as a developing nation.”
Dr. Dinesh Nilkant, Pro-Vice Chancellor of JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), sharing his views on the conference, “In society, literature and media play pivotal roles in shaping public consciousness and discourse. They influence how we perceive ourselves and others, challenging stereotypes and expanding our understanding of diverse cultures and social issues. Through storytelling, literature fosters empathy, connecting readers to human experiences beyond their own.” Further he added, “Literature, society, and global media are powerful tools that shape our worldview. Literature reflects the intricacies of human experiences and offers diverse perspectives, encouraging critical thinking and empathy. Society relies on these narratives to challenge conventions, inspire change, and foster cross-cultural connections. Global media amplifies these stories, breaking down barriers and spotlighting social issues on a global scale. Together, they play a vital role in promoting dialogue, inclusivity, and progress, making them essential to both individual and collective growth.”
Dr. Shradha Kanwar, Chief Academic Officer, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) stated, “Language is more than just a medium of communication; it serves as a window into our cognition. Literature, in particular, enriches this cognitive process by fostering imagination and leading us toward truth. In an age where misinformation and disinformation are rampant, literature stands as their antithesis, helping us discern reality through creativity and insight.”
Shri Ravindra Bhandary, Vice President, JGI Group, expressed “Literature empowers people to develop new ideas and ways of thinking while media is a distribution medium to shape the ideas and beliefs of the people.”
Dr. Bhargavi D Hemmige, Conference Chairperson & Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication emphasized “The literature offers timelessness whereas main key highlights of journalism are timeliness. This is the appropriate platform to discuss about the narratives, conflicts, and interconnections of literature, and journalism and how they shape our society.” Further she added, We are overwhelmed to receive about 300 abstracts & full-length papers for our conference where we have selected 230 papers across various themes. We are happy to receive papers in Kannada, Hindi, Sanskrit & Telugu papers across departments like, English Literature, Journalism, Sociology, Analogy, Jainology, Political etc.
Dr. Shyamali Banerjee, Conference Convener & Associate Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication stated “Literature begins where science ends, transcending as an open window to make people realize the importance of voices that need to be heard and implemented. Media reflection also plays an important role in shaping the narrative towards serving the objectives of societal roles.”
