THE JOURNEY OF UDUPI-COCHIN SHIPYARD LIMITED:
Udupi-Cochin Shipyard Limited (Udupi-CSL), a key subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited, has been a shining beacon of transformation and resilience in India's shipbuilding industry. Rising from the dilapidated facilities of Tebma Shipyards Limited in February 2021, Udupi-CSL embarked on an ambitious journey to rebuild not only its infrastructure but also trust within the market. This relentless pursuit of excellence has positioned it as a critical player in the Indian and international maritime sector.
The Humble Beginnings
Udupi-CSL's initial focus was modest yet impactful. The shipyard began by constructing fishing boats for Indian coastal states and manufacturing 100-passenger aluminum ferries for Kochi Water Metro Limited under orders from Cochin Shipyard Limited. These small yet vital projects tested the team’s mettle as they concurrently worked to strengthen manpower and implement robust quality systems. Despite facing challenges, Udupi-CSL’s dedication to delivering high-quality vessels on time demonstrated its commitment to excellence.
Building Trust in the Industry
The first major breakthrough came with an order from Ocean Sparkle Limited, India’s largest tug operator, 02 x 62T Bollard Pull Tugs. This was followed by another order for 02 x 70T Bollard Pull Tugs from Polestar Maritime Limited. Despite concerns about delivery timelines, Udupi-CSL successfully delivered all the commercial projects ahead of schedule, earning the confidence and satisfaction of its customers. This achievement marked a significant milestone, reinforcing the yard's credibility.
Stepping onto the Global Stage
The turning point for Udupi-CSL was its engagement with Wilson ASA, Norway - Europe’s largest short sea shipowner, in February 2023. Wilson ASA's confidence in the yard’s infrastructure, project management, and leadership led to a landmark order, propelling Udupi-CSL’s order book to cross ₹500 crore. This international recognition laid the foundation for its entry into the global market, elevating its reputation.
Expansion and Repeat Orders
With its growing reputation, Udupi-CSL continued to secure significant projects. Repeat orders from Ocean Sparkle Limited and Polestar Maritime Limited, along with a major order for 08 x 6,300 TDW dry cargo vessels from Wilson ASA, expanded the yard's order book to over ₹1,500 crore. The yard’s collaboration with renowned international design firms such as Robert Allan Limited (Canada) and Conoship International (Netherlands) further bolstered its stature.
Integrated Growth and Stakeholder Collaboration
Udupi-CSL’s success is not limited to its order book. The shipyard has fostered robust relationships with stakeholders, suppliers, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Simultaneously, it prioritized building a skilled workforce through systematic recruitment and the implementation of an Integrated Management System. The extension of its leased land with Karnataka Maritime Board and careful infrastructure upgrades ensured sustainable growth.
Financial Turnaround
By March 2024, Udupi-CSL achieved financial stability, marking a remarkable turnaround within just three years. This achievement underscores the yard’s adherence to its commitments to delivering "Quality Ships in Time" and fostering relationships under its slogan, "Building Ships and Relationships."
Looking Ahead
Udupi-CSL’s journey exemplifies resilience, innovation, and dedication. As it continues to grow, the shipyard remains committed to excellence in shipbuilding and forging lasting relationships with stakeholders. Its story is a testament to the potential of India’s shipbuilding industry, inspiring confidence in a bright and sustainable future.
Through perseverance and a steadfast commitment to quality, Udupi-CSL has proven itself to be a cornerstone of India’s maritime aspirations. It stands poised for even greater achievements, sailing confidently towards new horizons
