National Science Day Celebrated at NITK Surathkal with Enthusiasm and Innovation

Surathkal, Karnataka – February 28, 2025 – The National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, celebrated National Science Day on February 28, 2025, at the NITK Campus to commemorate the pioneering discovery of the Raman Effect by the renowned Indian scientist, Sir C.V. Raman. The event brought together twenty high schools from the Dakshina Kannada district to celebrate the spirit of scientific inquiry and innovation.

In today's inaugural ceremony, the event was inaugurated by Prof. B. Ravi, Director of NITK, followed by two colloquial speeches delivered by distinguished speakers:

• Prof. N. Suryaprakash from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore

• Prof. Dileep Mampallil from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati

Prof. B. Ravi addressed the gathering and said, "Science is fundamentally about curiosity, understanding the reasons behind phenomena and how they function. This foundational knowledge is critical because once we understand the 'why', engineers step in to reimagine and improve the world. Engineers strive to make life easier and more efficient through innovation.

He added, "Technology, encompassing tools, techniques, machines, and AI, empowers us to turn these new ideas into practical solutions that benefit society. Thus, science seeks to explain 'why', engineering defines 'what', and technology shows 'how'. Finally, business and management demonstrate 'how' to implement these innovations effectively. Therefore, science, engineering, technology, and management are all crucial for societal progress.

He emphasized, "I am hopeful that among you, there will be bright sparks who keep their curiosity alive. Remember, your future depends on preserving nature and culture. Our ancient civilization and cultural heritage contain many profound secrets. Let me add the Four Rs: Future, Nature, Culture, and Scripture. From these Four Rs, we need to uncover what is hidden, using modern scientific principles to validate and rediscover tools that contribute to human progress.

He concluded, "In today's world, we face numerous challenges. In this context, it is imperative to preserve our environment and cultural heritage while advancing development. Achieving this is only possible through the collective efforts of all scientific disciplines. Never lose your innate ability to discover, explore, and relish the joy of new findings and their real-world applications to solve problems."

The day featured a science exhibition showcasing fascinating physical principles, designed to inspire and engage the young participants. An inter-school quiz competition was held for the school students who participated from various schools across the Dakshina Kannada district, encouraging students to demonstrate their scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and the presentation of certificates to participants.

This program was coordinated by the Department of Physics in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and Mathematical and Computational Sciences at NITK Surathkal.
