Mangalore: The Institute of Occupational Therapy, Srinivas University, will inaugurate its Occupational Therapy Outpatient Department (OPD) on December 19, 2025, at the new Pandeshwar campus of Srinivas University, with the objective of providing comprehensive and client-centred rehabilitation services to individuals of all age groups in the community.
The OPD will function from Monday to Friday, 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., and will operate as a community service centre offering free and quality therapeutic services to those in need.
This OPD will support individuals who experience difficulties in self-care, education, employment and daily activities due to physical, neurological, developmental, orthopaedic or mental health conditions. The primary aim is to enhance independence in activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, mobility, handwriting, school participation, work tasks and social functioning, thereby improving self-confidence and overall quality of life.
The Occupational Therapy OPD will provide services through the following specialized units:
Paediatric Therapy Unit:Provides therapy for children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), ADHD, learning difficulties, poor handwriting, fine motor and coordination problems, and sensory processing disorders.
Mental Health Unit:Offers services for individuals with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, focusing on emotional regulation, social skills, daily functioning, vocational participation and quality of life improvement.
Neurological Rehabilitation Unit:Delivers functional rehabilitation and promotes independence for individuals with stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions.
Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Unit:Provides therapy for fractures, musculoskeletal disorders, post-surgical orthopaedic conditions, work-related injuries, repetitive strain injuries, burns and pain that interferes with daily activities.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Unit:Assists individuals with physical disabilities, neurological conditions and age-related problems to improve independence in self-care, home management and community participation.
Sensory Integration Unit:Supports children with sensory regulation difficulties, attention deficits, behavioural issues and poor motor planning, helping them participate better in school and daily activities.
Splinting Unit:Designs and fabricates customized therapeutic splints and assistive devices for hand injuries, deformities, neurological conditions and post-surgical needs.
In addition, caregiver education services will be provided, offering guidance to family members on home-based therapy programmes, safe handling techniques and methods to promote independence. Architectural and environmental barriers at home, school and workplaces will be assessed, and practical suggestions will be given to improve safety and accessibility.
