Bengaluru, Whitefield : In an inspiring testament to parental love, sacrifice, and medical brilliance, a 61-year-old father donated one of his kidneys to save his critically ill daughter. She was battling end-stage kidney failure caused by Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a rare inherited condition.
This was not the first time he stepped forward to save his family. In 2013, he had volunteered to donate his kidney to his wife, who was suffering from the same genetic disorder. However, due to unexpected technical challenges during surgery, the transplant could not be completed at that time.
In 2025, when tragedy struck again and his daughter’s kidneys failed due to the same disease, the father did not think twice. He once again came forward—this time to save his only child.
Despite being 61 years old and living with diabetes and hypertension, a comprehensive evaluation at Medicover Hospitals revealed that his health conditions were well controlled, with no signs of organ damage. After a detailed review by a multidisciplinary team, he was accepted as a marginal donor.
The transplant surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Hareesha Babu K, Senior Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Dr. Pramod, Urologist and Kidney Transplant Specialist, and Dr. Dileep, Kidney Transplant Surgeon. The donated kidney began functioning immediately after transplantation.
“Through careful and detailed medical evaluation, even elderly donors with controlled diabetes and hypertension can safely be considered for kidney donation. This gives new hope to many families who struggle to find a suitable donor,” said Dr. Hareesha Babu K.
