Bengaluru: With a rise in cold, cough, fever, and respiratory infections during the winter season, doctors have expressed serious concern over the unnecessary use of antibiotics for common infections. In this context, a press meet was organized on the topic “Winter Infections and Antibiotic Misuse: What Is Viral? What Is Dangerous?”
The press meet was addressed by Dr. T. J. Pradeep Kumar, Senior Consultant Physician; Dr. Raja Selvarajan, Senior Consultant Physician & Diabetologist; and Dr. Mopidevi Raghuvarma, Consultant General Medicine Physician.
According to the doctors, most winter-related illnesses such as cold, cough, fever, sore throat, flu, and respiratory infections are viral in nature and do not require antibiotics. However, due to self-medication and lack of awareness, misuse of antibiotics is increasing.
Speaking at the event, Dr. T. J. Pradeep Kumar stated that viral infections usually resolve with adequate rest, proper hydration, and symptomatic treatment. “Unnecessary use of antibiotics can weaken the body’s immune system,” he said.
Dr. Raja Selvarajan warned that antibiotic resistance has become a serious global health concern, making future infections difficult to treat. He added that the risk is higher among diabetics and the elderly.
Dr. Mopidevi Raghuvarma emphasized that antibiotics should be used only on medical advice in cases of bacterial pneumonia, bacterial throat infections, sinus infections, ear infections, and severe secondary infections.
On this occasion, Mr. Krishnamurthy, Center Head, said,
“Creating awareness about the responsible use of antibiotics is extremely important. Avoiding self-medication and following a doctor’s advice can help prevent serious health complications in the future. Public cooperation is essential to protect community health.”
Consult a doctor immediately if you experience:
* High or persistent fever
* Difficulty in breathing or chest pain
* Symptoms lasting more than 5–7 days
* Severe weakness or dehydration
* Worsening of symptoms despite treatment
Doctors urged the public to avoid self-medication and seek timely medical advice. Responsible decision-making and judicious use of antibiotics are crucial for safeguarding public health.
