2nd Graduation Ceremony at Nitte College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bengaluru
Bengaluru: The pharmaceutical sector is far more than a commercial industry and remains a fundamental pillar of modern public health, said Dr. Bhagavan B.C., Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka, while delivering the Second Graduation Day address at Nitte College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bengaluru.
“Treatment is only one side of the coin; prevention is the most crucial strategy in public health,” Dr. Bhagavan said. He highlighted the role of the pharmaceutical sector in preventive medicine, citing landmark achievements ranging from the eradication of smallpox and management of HIV/AIDS to the rapid response during the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the sector has repeatedly demonstrated its capacity to change the course of global health.
Addressing the graduating students, Dr. Bhagavan said pharmacy graduates are fortunate to be trained through a multidisciplinary and integrated curriculum. He added that future pharmacists would play a key role in enabling patients to manage their health conditions effectively and reduce the risk of medical crises. He also spoke about the Student Research Fund introduced by RGUHS—the first such initiative in India—to promote a research culture among students. “A large number of quality research papers are now being published by student researchers, and I am confident that these budding pharmacists will significantly contribute to public health in the coming years,” he said.
During the ceremony, 63 students were awarded the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree, with most securing distinctions. Lavanya received the Gold Medal for securing the highest marks at the university level.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. Krathish Bopanna, Founder of Tejhana Consulting LLP, spoke on the growth of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. He stated that the sector, which was relatively insignificant two decades ago, has now emerged as a global powerhouse, ranking third globally by volume and fourteenth by value, with a market size exceeding USD 50 billion and projected to reach USD 130 billion by 2030.
The event was presided over by Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Vice Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University), who urged graduates to master emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, to advance pharmaceutical research and development.
Among those present were Dr. H.C. Nagaraj, Principal, Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology; Dr. Karunakara Rai, Executive Committee Member, Visvesvaraya Technological University; heads of various Nitte institutions; parents; and well-wishers.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. V. Kusum Devi, Principal, Nitte College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Veda B. Hacholli.
