Round Table on AI for Smart and Sustainable Agriculture Held at NITK Surathkal

Surathkal, February 10, 2026: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, in collaboration with the Education and Research Network of India (ERNET India), organized a Round Table Meeting on Artificial Intelligence for Smart and Sustainable Agriculture on February 9, 2026, as a pre-summit event under the India–AI Impact Summit 2026.

ERNET India is an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The meeting brought together experts from leading agricultural and technology institutions, including ERNET India; ICAR–National Research Centre on Pomegranate; ICAR–Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Regional Station, Vittal; University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad; ICAR–Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut; ICAR–Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur; Casper AgriScience, Bengaluru; and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Dharwad.

Welcoming the participants, Prof. B. Ravi, Director, NITK Surathkal, highlighted the institute’s strong research infrastructure and emphasized that AI-based solutions must address real field-level challenges and deliver tangible benefits to farming communities, particularly in regions such as coastal Karnataka. He stressed the importance of close collaboration between technology developers and domain institutions, including ICAR research centres, through joint problem identification and collaborative research. He also shared NITK’s plans to establish a Research and Innovation Park with a focus on sustainable agro-marine systems.

Ms. Preeti Nath (IES), Economic Advisor, MeitY, and Director General, ERNET India, underlined the significant contribution of agriculture to India’s economy. She stated that the objective of the pre-summit round table was to identify research gaps, India-specific constraints, and scalable AI-driven solutions. She highlighted the need for affordability, deployability, and interoperability of AI technologies, especially in low-connectivity environments, along with reliable field validation and measurable welfare outcomes for farmers.

The round table featured presentations and discussions by agricultural scientists and experts on domain-specific problem statements where artificial intelligence could play a transformative role. These deliberations focused on enabling data-driven decision-making, improving crop and plantation management, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

In the concluding session, Prof. K. Udaya Bhat, Dean (Research and Innovation), NITK Surathkal, outlined how the institute could support multi-institutional research collaborations and facilitate large-scale implementation through coordinated project management and effective translation of research outcomes into practice.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Jeny Rajan and Dr. Sourav Kanti Addya of NITK Surathkal, along with Dr. Paventhan from ERNET India.
