Cancer Awareness Survey Report Released in Mangaluru, Highlights Gap Between Awareness and Action

Mangaluru, March 21: A comprehensive cancer awareness survey covering over 10,000 households across Dakshina Kannada district was formally released on Saturday at Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O), Pumpwell, marking a significant initiative toward strengthening cancer prevention and early detection efforts in coastal Karnataka.

Titled “A Promising New Path in Cancer Awareness – 10000+ Household Cancer Awareness Survey Report,” the study was conducted by Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust in association with M.I.O. The survey, comprising 20 structured questions, involved participants from diverse backgrounds, including housewives, students, daily wage workers, professionals, and members of the business community.

The findings indicate a strong baseline awareness about cancer among the public. More than 90% of respondents identified tobacco consumption as a major cause of cancer, while a majority acknowledged that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates. The survey also found that most participants understood that cancer is a non-communicable disease, reflecting the effectiveness of ongoing awareness campaigns.

Despite this encouraging awareness, the report highlights a significant gap in preventive action. Fewer than 15% of respondents reported undergoing routine cancer screening. Key barriers include fear of diagnosis, concerns about treatment costs, and limited access to nearby healthcare facilities. Awareness regarding the HPV vaccine, which can prevent certain types of cancer, was found to be moderate, while many individuals continue to seek medical help only at advanced stages of the disease.

At the same time, the survey noted positive trends, including increased awareness of healthy dietary practices and the adoption of self-examination methods among some sections of the population.

The report recommends targeted interventions such as subsidized screening programmes, counselling to address fear and stigma, expanded HPV vaccination awareness drives, and the introduction of mobile screening units to improve accessibility. It also emphasizes the role of trusted communication channels—including healthcare professionals, mainstream media, and digital platforms—in encouraging proactive health behaviour.

The book release function was presided over by Dr. D Suresh Rao, Managing Trustee of Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust and Director of M.I.O. The event was attended by chief guests Ivan D’Souza and Walter Nandalike, along with doctors, healthcare experts, community leaders, and survey participants. Key findings were presented through an audio-visual presentation, followed by discussions on improving cancer prevention strategies in the region.

The survey report will be submitted to the Government of Karnataka and relevant health authorities, with the aim of informing policies focused on early detection and preventive healthcare. Organisers also called on the media to play an active role in disseminating the findings to the wider public.

Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust, a non-profit organisation, continues to support cancer patients in coastal Karnataka through financial assistance and awareness initiatives. Closely associated with M.I.O, the trust also operates “Mahiti Kendras” (Cancer Information Centres) across Karnataka to promote early detection and symptom awareness.

Established in 2011, Mangalore Institute of Oncology is a leading cancer care facility in the region, offering comprehensive oncology services through advanced technology and a multidisciplinary team, with a focus on accessible and affordable treatment.
