'Material Advantage Student Chapter' inaugurated at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Metallurgy, which originated as an applied science during the early stages of human civilization, has today evolved into the highly advanced field of Material Science, said V. Babu Satyan, former Chairman of the Bengaluru Chapter of the American Society for Metals and Managing Director of Process Pumps.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Material Advantage Student Chapter’ at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology in the city. Emphasizing the importance of material science for engineers, he noted that it plays a crucial role in enabling technological innovations. He also highlighted its significance in developing sustainable technologies and promoting the use of alternative energy sources.
Satyan explained that the integration of material science and engineering facilitates the production of high-strength, large-scale metallic components, as well as lightweight devices used in medical and electronic applications. He added that the newly established student chapter would provide students with direct exposure to industries, helping them gain practical knowledge and better prepare for professional roles.
Further, he stated that physics and chemistry form the foundational pillars of metallurgical engineering. While physics enhances mechanical intelligence, chemistry supports the implementation of compositional intelligence. He pointed out that the production of corrosion-resistant bridge cables, lightweight aircraft components, and high-purity copper wires for microelectronics relies heavily on these disciplines.
The event was attended by Dr. Nataraj J.R., Chairman of the American Society for Metals, as the chief guest. The Principal of the institute, Dr. H.C. Nagaraj, presided over the function and stressed the need to study ancient Indian engineering achievements, noting that such studies reveal sustainable technologies developed thousands of years ago.
Dr. Ramesh Babu, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, along with faculty coordinators Dr. Shivapratap Singh Yadav and Dr. Avinash L., were also present at the event.
