SURATHKAL, May 16, 2026 – A three-member student team from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, has clinched first place at the prestigious Bharat AI SoC Student Challenge.
The nationwide competition was jointly organized by ARM, the Chip to Startup Programme, the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY), Government of India, and IIT Delhi.
The winning team comprises fourth-semester B.Tech. students from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE): Mr. Shresh Parti, Mr. Rushil Jain, and Mr. Sriprahlad Mukunthan. The students were mentored by Prof. Suman David, a professor in the ECE department.
Developing Touchless Media Control
The NITK team secured the top spot in the highly competitive category: “Touchless HCI for Media Control Using Hand Gestures on NVIDIA Jetson Nano.”
Their project introduces an innovative touchless Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) system that translates real-time hand gestures into media control commands—such as play, pause, and volume adjustments—specifically optimized for VLC Media Player.
The technical breakdown of their winning solution includes:
Gesture Tracking: Utilizing Google's MediaPipe framework for precise hand landmark detection.
Classification: Differentiating between static and dynamic hand gestures in real-time.
System Mapping: Employing specialized Python libraries to map these gestures directly to operating system keyboard shortcuts.
A Rigorous National Competition
The Bharat AI SoC Student Challenge was a rigorous five-week virtual initiative designed to foster industry-relevant skills through hands-on, project-based learning in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and System-on-Chip (SoC) technologies.
The competition drew massive interest across the country, receiving 340 project submissions. Out of these, only six teams per category were shortlisted for the final presentation rounds, where NITK emerged victorious.
Recognition and Rewards
At the official award ceremony held on May 14, 2026, at the ARM Labs in Bangalore, the team was presented with a cash prize of ₹1,00,000 along with certificates of achievement. In addition to the accolades, the students were granted an exclusive tour of ARM’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, where they interacted with leading industry chip designers.
Congratulating the team on their stellar performance, Prof. B. Ravi, Director of NITK Surathkal, commended the students and their mentor for bringing national recognition to the institute and showcasing the high caliber of research and innovation fostered at NITK.
