Teach children to love nature and all living beings: Mata Amritanandamayi Devi

Brahmasthanam Mahotsava Begins in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Sadguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, popularly known as Amma, called upon people to live with greater humility, compassion and reverence towards nature. Addressing devotees at the Brahmasthanam Mahotsava at Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Bolur, Mangaluru, Amma said humanity must learn to live in cooperation with fellow human beings, in companionship with nature, and in communion with God. She said pandemics, natural disasters and climate change were reminders for humankind to rethink its relationship with nature.

Amma said that negotiations and compromises may work in conflicts between people, communities and nations, but they would not work with nature. “The only effective method with nature is to approach her with humility, devoid of arrogance, with a bowed head and a heart filled with friendliness and reverence,” she said. True coexistence, Amma added, is built on the awareness that human beings must collectively share the earth, its natural resources and abundance with fellow beings and other creatures.

Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi, who was the chief guest, said Amma’s work extended beyond spirituality and had touched several areas of social life. Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader said spiritual strength had lasting value and could help those in public life address the problems faced by society. Swami Jitakamananda, Captain Brijesh Chowta MP, former ministers Pramod Madhwaraj and J. Krishna Palemar, Karnataka Additional Chief Secretary Ritesh Kumar, Kishore Alva, Prakash Pai Peraje and Suresh Amin were among those present.

As part of the festival, the Math launched and supported several welfare initiatives, including assistance for children undergoing cardiac surgeries, financial support for 1,200 AmritaSREE self-help group members, a seaweed cultivation project for coastal livelihoods, and a mental health awareness initiative led by AYUDH Mangaluru. The festival also featured special pujas, darshan, volunteer-led service activities, a free medical camp, annadanam and other facilities for devotees from Karnataka and neighbouring states.
