Gulf Medical University’s College of Dentistry Sets Regional Benchmark with 120-Chair Teaching Hospital

AJMAN, UAE — Gulf Medical University’s (GMU) College of Dentistry has established one of the region’s largest clinical training infrastructures, utilizing a 120-chair facility inside Thumbay Dental Hospital to center its academic degree programs around hands-on clinical experience.

Chair capacity often presents a bottleneck in dental education worldwide, dictating how quickly students transition from simulation labs to direct patient care. At GMU’s Ajman campus, the capacity allows students to bypass scheduling delays and progress through increasingly complex cases, treating real patients under specialist supervision from early in their training.

Before entering patient clinics, students build core skills in a dedicated preclinical laboratory. Workstations are equipped with phantom heads supplied with running water and air to replicate the mechanical conditions of a live dental unit. Second- and third-year students use the facility to practice clinical procedures, ergonomics, four-handed dentistry, and full infection control protocols.

The preclinical lab is part of the university’s broader simulation network, which links six connected training facilities on campus. This includes a dedicated Dental Simulation Centre and the multidisciplinary Thumbay Institute of Clinical Simulation, allowing students to refine their techniques in a controlled environment.

The program’s academic standing rests on several national and international credentials. In January 2024, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) became the first undergraduate dental program in the UAE to earn accreditation from the Australian Dental Council. The BDS program holds full accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Education, while the clinical training and internship program at Thumbay Dental Hospital carries a five-year accreditation from the National Institute of Health Specialties, granted in March 2023.

The five-year BDS curriculum consists of 15 semesters and 200 credits, structured on a competency-based framework aligned with UAE national standards. Digital dentistry is incorporated throughout the program via a dedicated laboratory established in 2023. Equipped with intraoral scanners, 3D printers, and CAD/CAM systems, the facility operates in partnership with industry technology firms including exocad, Shofu, and Alliedstar.

Beyond undergraduate study, GMU offers a complete clinical progression pathway. Options include a one-year structured internship at Thumbay Dental Hospital, Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degrees in Periodontics, Endodontics, and Orthodontics, specialty Residency Programs, a Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology, and a Diploma for Dental Assistant.

The College operates within Gulf Medical University’s integrated academic health system, offering access to hospital networks, research facilities, and student support services via its Student Happiness Center. Admissions are currently open across all programs with limited seating.
