SURATHKAL: Dr. Shashi Bhushan Arya, Associate Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, has been conferred the prestigious Shri S.K. Seshadri Memorial Mascot National Award–2026.
The honour was awarded by the Electrochemical Society of India (ECSI) in recognition of Dr. Arya’s significant research contributions to industrial corrosion science, corrosion prevention and monitoring, pipeline integrity, and sustainable surface engineering technologies.
The award was presented during the 33rd National Symposium on Electrochemical Science and Technology (NSEST–2026), held on August 28–29 at the JRD Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Chief Guest Dr. Shubha V. Iyengar, Padma Shri awardee and former Distinguished Scientist at CSIR–National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL), Bengaluru, handed over the accolade, which includes a cash prize of ₹25,000.
The national award highlights Dr. Arya’s sustained research in assessing and mitigating corrosion in critical industrial infrastructure, particularly petroleum pipelines, as well as his expertise in advanced protective coatings and surface engineering.
Following the presentation, Dr. Arya delivered an invited technical lecture titled "Flow-Driven Internal Corrosion of Petroleum Pipelines: Mechanisms, Monitoring, and Mitigation." His presentation addressed key interactions between fluid dynamics and internal pipeline degradation, outlining engineering solutions to enhance the reliability, safety, and operational lifespan of critical energy infrastructure.
Established in 1963 at IISc Bengaluru, the Electrochemical Society of India (ECSI) is one of the nation's premier professional bodies dedicated to promoting research, technical education, and industrial developments in electrochemistry and materials degradation.
Extending its congratulations, NITK Surathkal acknowledged the support of ECSI, the award committee, and Dr. Arya’s academic collaborators, research scholars, and students, noting that the distinction further strengthens the institute's position as a center of excellence in materials engineering and corrosion science.
