BENGALURU: Modern Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems have become the heartbeat of sustainable and smart infrastructure, stated Sarah E. Maston, President of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), USA.
She was speaking after inaugurating a one-day seminar titled "Future of Smart Buildings: Role of BMS, IoT, AI, and Energy Management in Sustainable Buildings" at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), a constituent college of Nitte (Deemed to be University). The seminar was organized by NMIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with the Bangalore Chapters of ASHRAE and the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE).
Highlighting the sector's shift toward data-driven networks, Maston emphasized that integrating Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into climate control systems allows buildings to dynamically adjust to occupancy patterns, balancing optimal indoor air quality with maximum energy efficiency. She noted that future-proofing the built environment relies heavily on transforming conventional heating and cooling systems into intelligent networks, adding that tackling climate change requires consistent building codes, cross-functional teamwork, and innovative education to attract new talent.
The seminar featured expert presentations by key industry figures, including Sharmila S.M., Associate Vice President at Siemens Technology and Services Pvt. Ltd.; Naveen Hiremagalur, Controls Domain Leader at Johnson Controls; and Debashree Dinda, Controls Stream Leader at Trane Technologies. They highlighted that cloud computing, AI, and digital twins are central to developing low-carbon smart buildings. The speakers emphasized that as the sector moves toward an autonomous, net-zero future, it will generate abundant career opportunities by 2034, urging young engineers to combine core domain expertise with skills in software, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
The inaugural event was attended by prominent industry representatives and academic leaders, including Amarnarayan, CEO of Technogreen; Sampath Kumar, Vice President of Reliance Retail Ltd.; Nisha Nair, Associate Director at VKA Powermaster; Dr. Kapilan, Seminar Coordinator; and Dr. Ramesh Babu N., Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, alongside officials from Trane Technologies, faculty members, and engineering students.
