BENGALURU: Emphasizing that road safety is a shared collective responsibility, experts and industry leaders underscored the urgent need for behavioral reform during a one-day road safety bootcamp titled ‘Ride Wise, Stay Safe’.
The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative was organized by the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, a constituent college of Nitte (Deemed to be University) (NMIT), in collaboration with Aavas Financiers Ltd. and Triguna-The Science of Living, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating lasting social impact.
Addressing the Crisis
Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Arvind Kulkarni, Trainer at Aavas Financiers Ltd., highlighted the deep connection between mindful choices and personal protection.
"Just as finding the right opportunity is crucial for achieving your goals, practicing road safety with patience and presence of mind is essential to protect not just ourselves, but our families and loved ones. I urge everyone to maintain patience, caution, and presence of mind whenever on the road," Kulkarni opined.
Guests of Honor and speakers Ashna Navas, Assistant Manager, and Himanshu Pandey, Project Coordinator of Triguna-The Science of Living, presented sobering statistics on the state of national road networks.
Alarming Statistics: India currently ranks first globally in road accidents, recording roughly 56 accidents and 20 deaths every hour.
Primary Causes: Approximately 90% of these incidents stem from human error, including overspeeding, driver distraction, and driving under the influence.
Broader Impacts: Beyond the tragic loss of life, poor road safety creates severe economic burdens and exacerbates traffic congestion.
The speakers emphasized that mitigating these risks demands active behavioral changes, heightened environmental awareness, and a unified commitment from all road users.
Interactive Learning and Helmet Distribution
The bootcamp focused on practical engagement rather than conventional lecturing. It featured immersive learning modules and Virtual Reality (VR) simulations designed to demonstrate safe riding and driving habits. As a tangible step toward student safety, around 300 helmets were distributed to attendees to encourage responsible two-wheeler practices.
Leadership and Coordination
The event commenced with an introductory address by Dr. Parameshachari B.D., Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, who outlined the objectives and vision of the bootcamp. The smooth execution of the program was overseen by event coordinators Dr. Anupama Sindgi and Smitha Sharath Shankar, alongside participating faculty members and an enthusiastic turnout of students.
