K R Pura in Nanjungud tells a success story, Krishnaraja Pura witnesses a silent revolution

Nanjungud: In the Nanjungud Assembly constituency, a silent revolution is underway, which is an offshoot of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and a citizen-centric effort led by local MLA B Harshavardhan. Visiting the constituency would be eye-opening if one wanted to see how structural improvements may be implemented through good governance and infrastructure building.

To enhance people's living conditions, the BJP MLA of this reserved constituency in Mysuru district chose health and sanitation as primary goals. In the first phase, he chose Krishnaraja  Pura village in the constituency to eliminate the use of human labour for cleaning drainage and sewage pipelines, as well as cleaning manholes. Almost 200 houses in the village are no longer transporting their night soil on a daily basis. This is also one of the goals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's major programme, the Swacha project.

Harshavardhan began a project to network sewage lines in the hamlet to transport all dirt, including excreta, to a specified collecting location as soon as he noticed that manual cleaning was being done. And this has made a huge difference for the locals because they no longer have to worry about losing sleep or their health by carrying the dirt every night.

Putting an end to hand scavenging was the "most fulfilling" activity MLA has done thus far. "I was appalled to see people cleaning sewers and pits with their hands." My constituency cannot support such an inhumane system. And, by constructing drainage systems and laying pipes, I've put an end to this disgrace. Hygiene and good health are two of the most important aspects of one's life.”
