A fond farewell to Dr. Rajalakshmi N K

UCM: The English Dept HoD retires after 36 years of service



Mangalore: My parents never pampered me and I am thankful to them. Experiences, especially 36 years of rich bond with University College Mangaluru molded my life, said Dr. Rajalakshmi N K, the retired English Department Head of University College Mangaluru, during her farewell function, recently. 


Addressing the gathering at Ravindra Kalabhavana, the heritage structure of the college, she recalled her growth, from an ordinary, ignorant science student to become an English professor. She recalled her love towards chemistry, contributions to the college magazine, which finally lead her towards language and literature, rich family background, Dr. Hiremath, a fatherly principal, who guided her during earlier days. 


She fondly recalled the support of her husband, former principal of the college, Dr Udaykumar Irvattur. “With his support, I could handle multiple responsibilities, brought change in evaluation system, finished major projects like journalism lab, English language lab, published books, conducted seminars etc. I could contribute towards major projects like- Mid-day meal,” she said. Meanwhile she urged to conduct academic exchange programs within the knowledge at least once in a month to share knowledge. 


Dr Udaykumar Irvattur hailed the retiring professor’s contribution to the college and recalled her commitments. “She is a perfectionist and excellent in her subject. She developed reading habit among students and English department was methodic. In a way she is my teacher too,” he said. 


Principal Dr. Anasuya Rai hailed Dr. Rajalakshmi N K as a multitalented, perfect woman who contributed a lot to the institution. She assured of starting an academic exchange activity in the college soon. Meanwhile, Dr. Sudha N Vaidya, Aruna Kumari, Dr. K M Usha, Dr. Veerabadrappa, Dr. Ganapathi Gowda, Dr. Ramakrishna, Sriraj B S, Zaibunnuissa, Krishna Shettigar and others shared their fond memories with the retiring professor. Political Science Department Head Dr. Latha A. Pandit mastered the ceremony.
