Human-Carrying Drone Unveiled at Srinivas University

“Shree Vimana”: A New Step in Air Mobility



Mangalore: In a remarkable display of interdisciplinary innovation, a team of students and faculty from the Srinivas Institute of Engineering and Technology, under Srinivas University, has developed a unique human-carrying drone named “Shree Vimana”, capable of transporting a person up to 15 kilometers. Its successful launch took place on August 25, 2025, at the Mukka campus of Srinivas College.


This project was a collaboration between the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and AI, Robotics, and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. It has the potential to bring significant transformation in disaster management, healthcare, and defence sectors.


Speaking on the occasion, Honourable Chancellor of Srinivas University Dr. CA A. Raghavendra Rao said that Shree Vimana is a milestone in the achievements of the university. The drone was developed under the leadership of Prof. Vishwas Shetty, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, along with his students. He added that more innovations are expected from the university in the coming days.


Honorable Pro-Chancellor Dr. A. Srinivas Rao, Board of Governors member Mrs. A. Vijayalakshmi R. Rao, Prof. Mrs. ER. Mitra S. Rao, Registrar Dr. Anil Kumar, Development Registrar Dr. Ajay Kumar, and others were present.


A Design Born of Necessity

Unlike conventional drones mainly used for cargo delivery or surveillance, this new drone has been designed to safely and efficiently transport a human being. To overcome the unique challenges of carrying a live passenger, the development team conducted extensive tests to ensure stability, safety, and overall performance.


This careful approach highlights the university’s priority on human safety. According to Pro-Chancellor Dr. A. Srinivas Rao, the successful trials have shown that the drone can maintain balance and operate reliably even under varied conditions.


Versatile Applications for Social Good

The possible applications of this drone are vast and could have a transformative impact on society. During natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes, it can be used to rescue people trapped in inaccessible areas.


In emergencies and accidents, it can swiftly transport medical personnel, medicines, and essential supplies to remote or hard-to-reach regions. Beyond humanitarian operations, its advanced capabilities also open pathways for significant advancements in defence technology.


Navigating the Regulatory Framework

Recognizing the complexities in regulating human-carrying UAVs, Srinivas University has paid special attention to adhering to guidelines from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other regulatory bodies.


DGCA classifies drones based on their weight and enforces strict rules regarding registration, pilot certification, and zones of operation. According to Prof. Vishwas Shetty, the university’s compliance-focused approach will ensure successful approval and responsible use of the project.


A Model for Future Innovations

This drone development stands as a brilliant example of interdisciplinary collaboration. By integrating structural strength from Mechanical Engineering, autonomous control from AI & Robotics, and operational techniques from Aircraft Maintenance, the team created a breakthrough solution.


This project sets a model for future research and development, demonstrating the crucial role academic institutions can play in solving real-world challenges, while also positioning Srinivas University at the forefront of air mobility innovation.

The project was led by Prof. Vishwas Shetty along with students Vishakh Mendon (Mechanical Engineering) and Arvind Wilson (Robotics Engineering). The active encouragement of Chancellor Dr. CA A. Raghavendra Rao and Pro-Chancellor Dr. A. Srinivas Rao was a key factor in the project’s success.


Notably, Prof. Swati became the first woman to fly in Shree Vimana during the launch. Also present were Dean of Engineering & Technology Dr. Ramakrishna N. Hegde, Director of Research Dr. Praveen B. M., and Balakrishna Gatti of Gajanan Machine Works, who assisted in the drone welding process.
