Shocking Injury, Stunning Recovery: Life Reclaimed After Brain Exposure

Bengaluru, Whitefield :  A 17-year-old boy from West Bengal who suffered a life-threatening electric burn injury has been given a second chance at life, a complex and courageous surgery performed by Dr. Deepak Arsikere Nataraju, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Medicover Hospital, Whitefield.

Three months ago, the boy accidentally came in contact with an electric pole, resulting in a high-voltage shock that severely damaged the right parietal region of his scalp and skull. The injury was so severe that part of his brain herniated through the scalp defect, causing fungating brain with secondary infection.

Despite undergoing initial treatment in West Bengal, his condition showed no improvement. Seeking better care, his family brought him to Medicover Hospital in Bengaluru. Upon arrival, the patient’s left side of the body was completely weak, indicating neurological damage.

Dr. Deepak and his team performed an intricate and high-risk surgery involving:

· Debridement and debulking of the infected and herniated brain tissue

· Dural repair using a fascia lata graft harvested from the thigh

· Scalp reconstruction using advancement of previously operated local flaps

· burr holes on bone for fresh granulation

The surgery was a success. In just a few weeks, the young boy made a remarkable recovery and has now been discharged in stable condition.

“This wasn’t just a surgical procedure – it was a victory of life over death. Cases like these remind us of the responsibility and power of our profession,” said Dr. Deepak with heartfelt satisfaction.
