Moon of India inaugurates first Astronomy Lab in undivided Dakshina Kannada at Alva’s Schools

Moodubidire: Padma Shri awardee Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, popularly known as the Moon Man of India, and Distinguished Space Scientist, inaugurated the first Astronomy Lab of undivided Dakshina Kannada at Alva’s Schools, Puthige, on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, he expressed immense delight in witnessing what he described as “not merely an astronomy lab, but a space lab in essence,” reflecting India’s growing aspirations in the domain of space science.

The former ISRO scientist said the newly established lab showcased India’s space journey from satellites and remote sensing to navigation, communication systems and landmark missions such as Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan. He hoped that the initiative would ignite curiosity among young minds and encourage them to question, innovate and explore new scientific frontiers.

Speaking about India’s scientific progress, Dr. Annadurai drew parallels with the rise of Indian chess prodigies emerging from school ecosystems. “If schools can produce world-class grandmasters, they can equally nurture future scientists,” he said, emphasizing the need for curiosity-driven learning and intellectual courage among students.

Reflecting on India’s achievement in discovering water on the moon, he observed, “Columbus discovered America while searching for India. Centuries later, America could not detect water on the moon, but India did.” He added that the moon might well become the “next America” for humanity’s future expansion. He reminded students to search for answers instead of stopping at questions. “Muscle power may limit us, but mind power never does,” he said, noting that India succeeded in space exploration despite limited resources.

Encouraging students to think beyond conventional learning, he reminded them that scientific progress begins with a question. “Every individual has a destination waiting to be reached,” he said. “With an open mind, open eyes and open ears, you can find your own path and make your presence meaningful to the world.” Dr. Annadurai concluded with a message of hope, expressing confidence that initiatives like Alva’s Astronomy Lab would inspire generations to pursue scientific discovery and contribute to India’s space odyssey.

Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Convener of the Amateur Astronomers Club, Sri Mahaveer College, Moodbidire, stated that India has achieved what even America once could not in space exploration, proving the world-class capability of ISRO scientists. He noted that Indian expertise in satellite technology is globally recognized, with nations seeking collaboration not only for scientific skill but also for India’s cost-efficient launch systems. Highlighting that Indian scientists are now in demand across continents, he said that the country’s progress in space research reflects innovation, courage and the power of indigenous knowledge.

Vivek Alva, Management Trustee of Alva’s Education Foundation, presiding over the program, remarked that most ISRO scientists hail not from elite science institutes but from rural backgrounds, proving that talent thrives beyond metros. Citing M. Annadurai as an example of innovation emerging from grassroots India, he urged students to embrace involvement, teamwork and creativity. He noted that while reaching the moon was once a distant dream, the present generation must prepare for challenges like building space colonies. “With honesty, purpose, interest and truthfulness, success is inevitable,” he added.

Army Recruitment Officer Mangalore, Colonel Somu Maharaj, Major Abhijith Singh, Mentor Ashwin Shenoy, Navras Space Lab’s Ravindranath Nadella & Shravan, Administrative Officer Preetham Kunder, Princiapal Mohamad Shafi Shiekh, Shailaja Bola Hegde were present among others.
