Golden Jubilee of New Mangalore Port Authority Marks 50 Years of Maritime Excellence



Mangalore: The Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Celebration of New Mangalore Port Authority today at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Stadium, Panambur, marking a historic milestone in India’s maritime journey. On his arrival to NMPA the Hon’ble Minister first visited the 150 bedded multi-speciality hospital, which one of the unique projects and the first hospital under PPP among the major ports in India. This was followed by inauguration of the Exhibition Hall showcasing NMPA’s 50-year journey of growth, service, and transformation, highlighting its key milestones, developmental projects, and contributions to the maritime sector.


The Hon’ble Minister lit the ceremonial lamp, inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Exhibition Hall showcasing the Port’s 50-year journey, and dedicated several developmental projects to the nation.


Distinguished dignitaries including Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Shri Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister for Health, Government of Karnataka, Shri U. T. Khader, Hon’ble Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, DK District, Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty MLA, Mangalore North, Shri Vedavyas Kamath, Mangalore, South, Former MP, DK District Shri Nalin Kumar Kateel and several senior officials and stakeholders graced the occasion.


Dr. A. V. Ramana, Chairman, NMPA, welcomed the gathering, while Smt. S. Shanthi, Deputy Chairperson, proposed the vote of thanks.


In his address, Shri Sonowal commended NMPA’s transformation from a modest regional port handling 1 lakh tonnes in 1975 to a major maritime hub managing 46 million tonnes of cargo in 2024–25, reflecting the Government’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat”. He lauded the Port’s efforts under the Sagarmala Programme, its drive toward digitalisation, green energy transition, and its significant contribution to the Blue Economy.


On this momentous occasion, the Hon’ble Minister inaugurated several new projects of over Rs. 1,500 crores including dedication of the Multi-speciality PPP Hospital, Under Vehicle Scanner System, Energy & food supplychain projects, the four-lane port connectivity road, truck terminal and rail cover  sheds. On this auspicious occasion of Golden Jubilee and Rani Abbakka’s co-inciding 500 yrs celebration, the Hon’ble Minister renamed the newly upgraded KK Gate as “Rani Abbakka Gate”, a tribute to Karnataka’s maritime heritage and the warrior queen who protected the shores of the region.


Shri Pralhad Joshi unveiled the centenary logo of the Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers Association, commemorating 100 years of cashew exports from Mangaluru. The Association felicitated the Hon’ble Minister during the event.


The celebrations also witnessed the distribution of CSR benefits to beneficiaries from various community development projects, and felicitations of stakeholders and retired officers who have contributed to the Port’s growth.

Over the years, NMPA has evolved into one of India’s most sustainable and technologically advanced ports — operating on 100% solar power, pioneering automation and RFID-based systems, and maintaining a 92% mechanized cargo handling operation.


The Golden Jubilee celebrations stand as a tribute to five decades of progress — from a regional harbour to a smart, green, and globally connected port, reinforcing NMPA’s commitment to driving India’s maritime vision towards Amrit Kaal 2047.


Over the years, NMPA has evolved into one of India’s most sustainable and technologically advanced ports — operating on 100% solar power, pioneering automation and RFID-based systems, and maintaining a 92% mechanized cargo handling operation.


The Golden Jubilee celebrations stand as a tribute to five decades of progress — from a regional harbour to a smart, green, and globally connected port, reinforcing NMPA’s commitment to driving India’s maritime vision towards Amrit Kaal 2047.


It is a moment of pride to be here in Mangaluru as we mark the Golden Jubilee of New Mangalore Port Authority — fifty years of service to the nation, fifty years of maritime progress, and fifty years of collective contribution to India’s economic development.


This occasion celebrates not only the growth of one port but also the transformation of India’s maritime sector over the last decade — a journey of reform, modernization, and innovation led by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji. The Golden Jubilee Commemorative event saw participation of thousands of people which included, stakeholder, employees, staffs and families, school children, members of unions, associations, pensioners of the Port and the general public.
