Rare Condition, Timely Surgery: Teen’s Life Saved at Medicover Hospital

Bengaluru, Whitefield : A 16-year-old boy was admitted to Medicover Hospital with abdominal pain and vomiting. An urgent CT scan revealed a rare condition: midgut volvulus with midgut malrotation, a congenital anomaly where the intestines fail to rotate properly during fetal development.

Normally, intestines rotate and settle into their proper positions in the womb. In this patient, abnormal rotation led to unusual intestinal development. While this condition is usually seen in infants and young children, its occurrence in individuals over 14 years old is extremely rare.

Dr. Vamshi Krishna, General Surgeon at Medicover Hospital, Whitefield, performed an exploratory laparotomy with Ladd’s procedure, successfully correcting the abnormal twisting of the intestines.

“This case is extremely rare. Midgut malrotation is typically seen in infants. In this instance, it presented at the age of 16. Without timely treatment, the intestines could have become gangrenous, posing a life-threatening risk. Immediate diagnosis and surgery saved the patient’s life,” said Dr. Vamshi Krishna.
