Surathkal; About 30 CEOs and representatives of various organizations located in Mangaluru and the surrounding region participated in the Coastal Conclave at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, on Saturday, 29th November 2025. The invitees included the leadership of KIOCL, MRPL, Paradeep Phosphates (erstwhile MCF), M11 Energy Transitions-Padubidri, cashew processing units, fishmeal processing units, District Industries Centre-Mangalore, CII-Mangalore, KCCI-Mangalore, NABARD-Mangalore, SBI-Mangalore, CREDAI-Mangalore, College of Fisheries-Mangalore, eSamudaay-Udupi, Malpe Meen-Udupi, Agriculture University of Shivamogga, and ICAR CPCRI Vitla.
The Conclave is a new initiative of NITK to bring the local institutes, industries, and communities to a common platform. It was organized by Science & Technology Entrepreneurs’ Park (STEP), headed by Prof. Subray Hegde, and the Institute Innovation Council (IIC), headed by Dr. K. Suprabha. The focus of discussion was how to build the coastal ecosystem and economy driven by technology while preserving the nature and culture of the region and aligning with the relevant national missions such as Atmanirbar Bharat Abhiyan and Sagarmala.
Prof. B Ravi, Director of NITK, presented the vision of NITK as ‘global excellence coupled with local relevance.’ He proposed offering NITK’s facilities and expertise to local R&D labs, business incubators, startups, MSMEs, corporates, public departments, and industry associations. The goal is to enhance the research, innovation, and entrepreneurship ecosystem in the coastal Karnataka region with the active support of interested partners. “NITK can offer value-added technical services such as contract research, product innovation, pilot production, testing & characterization, technology provision, partner connection, startup incubation, business acceleration, digital transformation, continuing education, skill certification, and talent acquisition,” he said.
Prof. Udaya Bhat, Dean (Research and Innovation), outlined the institute's joint projects, labs, and programs initiated with the support of industry, such as Digital Manufacturing (Siemens), Sustainable Engineering (Maire Tecnimont), Construction Technology & Management (Larsen & Toubro), and Electric Vehicles (Bosch). Prof. Prasanna Belur, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), emphasized the role of alumni and corporations in building strong industry-institute connections.
Shri Niranjana Mahabalappa, President of the NITK Surathkal Alumni Association, moderated the discussions, which enabled identifying the challenges faced by the farming, fishing, food-processing, and other local communities.
All participants welcomed the initiative and provided valuable insights. The Conclave concluded by unanimous resolve to build an integrated hub of research, innovation, and entrepreneurship at the NITK campus, which can be accessed by academics, industry, and public organizations for accelerating the economy of the region in a sustainable manner.
