Attempts to Spread Misconceptions About Arecanut Are Condemnable – All India Arecanut Growers’ Association

Puttur: The All India Arecanut Growers’ Association has strongly condemned the ongoing attempts to spread misconceptions about arecanut. The Association stated that, amid increasing discussions in Southeast Asian countries on the alleged health and social challenges arising from arecanut consumption, the World Health Organization (WHO) has organized an international webinar, which has drawn the attention of farmers across the country.

The Association emphasized that arecanut has been traditionally consumed and used across Asia for several centuries. So far, there has been no concrete evidence to establish that consumption of arecanut alone has caused adverse health effects. Today, arecanut is an economically vital crop, directly supporting the livelihoods of nearly 20 million farmers. The crop has also received institutional encouragement and support since 1948, contributing significantly to rural economies.

In this context, the Association stressed that governments should independently study whether arecanut is genuinely harmful before arriving at any conclusion. The views expressed by WHO should not be treated as final or conclusive. The Association warned that if the government were to take hasty or harsh measures based on incomplete evidence, it could lead to serious consequences for the entire arecanut sector. Therefore, efforts that create negative perceptions or confusion about arecanut at this stage are inappropriate, the Association’s President, Secretary, and members asserted.

The Association further noted that misleading opinions about arecanut have repeatedly been propagated at the international level, portraying arecanut itself as harmful. In reality, arecanut has been consumed for thousands of years in India and several other Asian countries as part of cultural and traditional practices.

It was pointed out that many studies have been conducted at the final stage of consumption, where arecanut is often mixed with various other substances. Based on such studies, arecanut alone is being portrayed as harmful, leading to increasing efforts, statements, and meetings aimed at regulating the crop. The Association stated that classifying arecanut as harmful and attempting to impose regulatory measures without clear and comprehensive scientific evidence is unjustified.

The Association also highlighted that the currently available studies, analyses, and scientific evidence related to arecanut are limited in scope. Hence, instead of imposing bans or spreading misconceptions, there is an urgent need to undertake independent, research-based studies focusing exclusively on arecanut. Only after obtaining such scientific reports should any policies or regulations be framed.

The All India Arecanut Growers’ Association urged the Government of India to seriously consider this issue and initiate a separate and comprehensive scientific study on arecanut. This demand was jointly emphasized by the Association’s President Mahesh Puchhappady, Secretary Venkatagiri C. V., and members of the Arecanut Growers’ Association.
