Priority to Skill-Based Technical Education: Empowering Youth Talent

Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar

Ujire: The state government is giving top priority to strengthening knowledge- and skill-based technical education that is relevant to all industrial sectors, and is actively working to empower the youth workforce to meet the expectations of various fields, said Karnataka Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar.

He was speaking after conferring degrees upon rank holders and graduating students at the Graduation Day ceremony organized on Friday in the Indraprastha Auditorium of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) Autonomous College, Ujire.

The Minister explained that the steps toward skill-based technical education will align with the prescribed curriculum framework. Efforts are being made to redesign sector-specific skill learning methods, keeping in mind the expectations and priorities of both traditional and emerging industries.

He pointed out that, as noted by NITI Aayog, there is a shortage of higher education institutions in the country capable of providing education that matches demand. According to norms, there should be at least 30 educational institutions per lakh population. When these standards are applied and statistics are reviewed, Karnataka has more than 66 higher education institutions per lakh population — well above the required benchmark. This achievement has been possible due to the encouragement given to the private sector alongside government institutions.

Thanks to the significant opportunities arising from collaboration between government and private sectors, there has been a notable increase in the proportion of female students pursuing and completing higher education. In the last two and a half years, the number of women graduating has been remarkably higher. This indicates that the day is not far when society will be recognized as women-led rather than male-dominated. The Minister described this as a highly promising development on the path to women’s empowerment.

To motivate students toward higher education, the Karnataka Government, in partnership with the Azim Premji Foundation, has implemented the ‘Deepika’ scheme — a major milestone in expanding educational opportunities for girls. Under this scheme, girl students who have completed education up to 10th standard, and first and second year PU in government institutions, receive an annual scholarship of ₹30,000 for up to three years. Already, 1.6 lakh girl students have registered under this initiative. The Minister praised the scheme as proof that the private sector can play a transformative role in responding to the government’s social development objectives, and commended the exemplary commitment of the Azim Premji Foundation.

Compared to other districts in the state, Dakshina Kannada possesses a unique quality of excellence. SDM institutions, flourishing on the soil of Ujire, have today become a proud symbol across Karnataka. SDM College, Ujire has received an A++ grade from NAAC. Achieving this recognition from NAAC is not easy — NAAC gives greater weightage to quality than to influence, and its evaluation criteria are stringent. In this context, SDM’s special achievement is highly commendable, the Minister said.

Presiding over the event, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, President of SDM Educational Institutions and Dharmadhikari of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, announced that an Agricultural University will be established.

He stated that only with a clear goal can bold steps lead to significant achievements. After graduation, students should develop strong determination and ambition to contribute to nation-building. This mindset will spark innovative ideas and the commitment to implement them. He advised the new graduates to think along these lines.

People from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, other states of the country, and various parts of Karnataka are coming to Ujire to pursue higher education through SDM institutions. Keeping these aspirations in mind, SDM has always prioritized introducing new courses. As a continuation of this tradition, the dream of starting an Agricultural University has now taken root, he added.

Dr. K.R. Kavitha, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Mangaluru, administered the oath to the graduates. Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade honored Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar by presenting a memento. Dr. Satishchandra S, Secretary of SDM Educational Institutions, was present.

Dr. Vishwanath P, Principal of SDM College, and Prof. K.P. Nandakumari, Vice Principal, welcomed the gathering. B. Ganeshanayak, Controller of Examinations, announced the degree results and sought permission from Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade (who presided over the event) to begin the degree conferment. After receiving approval, degrees were awarded. Prof. Shridhar N. Bhat, Administrative Officer, proposed the vote of thanks. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
