Surathkal, 02.03.2026: E-Mobility Vehicles equipped with GPS tracking and smart lock technology were handed over to Divyang students of NITK Surathkal by Shri Sudhir Kumar, Managing Director of PETRONET MHB Ltd. and alumnus of the 1989 Mechanical Engineering batch of NITK, along with Prof. B. Ravi, Director of NITK Surathkal, in a ceremony recently held on campus.
The fleet consists of 25 e bicycles and 7 motorised wheelchairs, designed and fabricated in house by Dr. Pruthviraj, Associate Professor at NITK Surathkal. All vehicles are compatible with the URJAA solar powered charging station, installed in 2022 with support from the 1970 batch of alumni. The project was funded by PETRONET MHB Ltd. (a subsidiary of ONGC and HPCL) under their CSR initiative for the year 2025–26.
Speaking at the event, Shri Sudhir Kumar mentioned that mobility is another challenge for Divyang students who make it to premier institutions like NITK. Hence, PMHBL sponsored e mobility cycles and wheelchairs, which have been built in house at NITK with app based control and advanced features. He expressed his happiness about partnering with NITK, which is his alma mater.
Director Prof. Ravi welcomed the CSR support from PETRONET for providing mobility solutions to Divyang students, and said that this will enable them to move freely through the campus for attending classes and participating in various events. He said: “I am particularly happy that the e-mobility vehicles have advanced features, and have been developed at NITK itself, by the faculty and students. It is an excellent example of industry-academia collaboration for social impact.”
The ceremony was attended by senior officers of PETRONET, including Ms. Saisudhamyee, Head-Technical, Mr. Uday Pai, Head-Operations, and others. The NITK functionaries included Prof. Kumar G.N, Registrar I/c, Prof. Venkatesa Perumal, Dean-Planning and Development, Prof. Prasanna Belur, Dean-Alumni and Corporate Relations, and many other faculty, staff and student representatives.
