Mangaluru: Most Rev. Msgr. Leslie F. Shenoy, widely respected as a humble priest, educator, and humanitarian, passed away on May 24, 2026, at Fr. Muller Hospital in Mangaluru. He was 79.
Born on October 4, 1947, in Urwa, Mangaluru, Msgr. Leslie Shenoy grew up in a deeply faith-filled Catholic family. From a young age, he was known for his simplicity, discipline, compassion for the poor, and strong spiritual values rooted in parish life and Konkani culture.
He was ordained a priest on May 14, 1976, for the Archdiocese of Calcutta. During his priestly ministry, he served in India and abroad, including with the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), earning admiration for his pastoral leadership and missionary spirit.
In 1979, he moved to the United States and later served in the Diocese of Fresno in California, ministering in parishes associated with air force bases. Although he became an American citizen in 1985, he remained deeply attached to his homeland and continued supporting numerous charitable causes in coastal Karnataka.
Msgr. Shenoy was especially known for his extraordinary generosity and quiet philanthropy. He established the “Msgr. Leslie F. Shenoy Scholarship” through the Catholic Board of Education to support deserving students. He also created a ₹1 crore bursary fund for seminarians in Mangaluru to encourage priestly vocations.
In 2025, on the occasion of his 78th birthday, he donated a senior citizen home worth nearly ₹1.2 crore in Puttur, built entirely from his retirement savings. He also extended financial assistance to needy families, including donating pickup vehicles to help them earn a livelihood with dignity.
Despite his wealth and influence, Msgr. Shenoy was remembered as a simple, prayerful, soft-spoken, and approachable priest with a deep concern for the poor and suffering.
His passing has left the Catholic community and countless beneficiaries of his charity in deep mourning. Church leaders, priests, and faithful have described him as a compassionate shepherd whose life reflected service, sacrifice, and unconditional love for humanity.
Msgr. Leslie Shenoy leaves behind a lasting legacy through the students he educated, the seminarians he supported, the elderly he cared for, and the many lives he transformed through kindness and generosity.
