Two-day capacity-building programme features experts from IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, and other premier institutions; serves as a strategic pre-conference event for ICCC 2027.
SURATHKAL, KARNATAKA, June 11, 2026 : The Sustainable Construction and Building Materials (SCBM) Laboratory within the Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal officially commenced a two-day national workshop today. The Collaborative Workshop and Capacity Building programme on the Durability and Sustainability of Concrete runs from June 11–12, 2026, bringing together eleven leading researchers from eight of India’s premier engineering institutions.
The workshop addresses a critical, multi-billion-dollar challenge in India's infrastructure sector: premature concrete degradation, which prematurely drains national resources through frequent repairs and reconstruction. Over the two-day event, experts will address cutting-edge solutions across key thematic areas, including durability mechanisms, low-carbon binders, service life prediction, performance design, reinforced concrete corrosion, circular economy frameworks, 3D concrete printing, and the utilization of industrial by-products.
The inaugural function, held today on the NITK campus, was presided over by Prof. Subhash Chandra Yaragal, Deputy Director of NITK Surathkal. Dr. L. P. Singh, Director General of the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM), attended as the Chief Guest and delivered the keynote address on emerging priorities in durable and sustainable concrete research. Prof. Shashank Bishnoi, Deputy Director of the IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi Campus, served as the Guest of Honour.
Organized in association with IIT Delhi, NCCBM, and IIT Madras, the workshop is coordinated by Prof. B. B. Das and co-coordinated by Dr. Rajasekaran C of NITK's Department of Civil Engineering. The initiative is robustly supported by the L&T-sponsored MTech (Construction Technology and Management) programme project at NITK, alongside NCCBM and UltraTech Cement.
Distinguished resource persons leading the technical sessions include faculty from IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Roorkee, IIT Jodhpur, and Thapar University (Patiala), alongside the leadership of the NCCBM.
In addition to driving national capacity building, this workshop serves as an official pre-conference event for the prestigious International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement (ICCC 2027), scheduled to be held in New Delhi in October 2027. By anchoring this workshop to the ICCC, the organizers aim to bridge Indian academic research with global industrial platforms.
