NMIT Welcomes 1,400 New BTech Students; Industry Leaders Urge Adaptability in the AI Era

BENGALURU: Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), a constituent college of Nitte (Deemed to be University), commenced its academic year by hosting a two-day Orientation Day ceremony for its incoming 2026–2030 BTech batch. The event drew a massive gathering of 1,400 new students and their parents.

Inaugurating the first day of the orientation, Kishore P. Durg, Senior MD and Global Lead at Accenture LearnVantage & Mid Market, delivered a compelling address on the accelerating pace of technological change.

"I recall a time when technological advancements occurred every five to ten years, allowing us ample opportunity to adapt and redefine our paths," Durg noted, contrasting it with today's landscape where innovation shifts within weeks or days. He emphasized the stark difference between human learning and machine learning speeds. "While you have dedicated 18 years to your education, AI can assimilate knowledge in a matter of months, and soon, potentially even weeks. This stark contrast highlights the urgency for you to adapt and find ways to create value in this fast-evolving environment."

The second day featured an address by Dr. E. Dwarakadasa, CEO & MD of Karnataka Hybrid Micro Devices Limited and former Professor at IISc, Bengaluru. Dr. Dwarakadasa urged students to look beyond material wealth. "Success is no longer just about financial wealth; it is about building a reputation and making a meaningful impact," he said. He encouraged the freshmen to discover their unique paths, align their careers with their passions, and prepare to make their mark globally.

Presiding over the ceremony, Rohit Punja, Trustee of the Nitte Education Trust, highlighted the social aspect of campus life. He advised the incoming class to build a strong network of peers, noting that the friendships formed during these four academic years often serve as lifelong personal and professional support systems.

Earlier, Dr. H.C. Nagaraj, Principal of NMIT, extended a warm welcome to the gathering, underscoring the critical roles that discipline and effective time management play in an engineering career. Vice Principal Dr. J. Sudheer Reddy briefed the audience on NMIT’s infrastructure, highlighting its state-of-the-art, industry-supported laboratories, international collaborations, and ongoing institutional initiatives.

The event was attended by several key dignitaries, including Dr. Kavitha Kamath, Deputy Registrar of the Nitte (Deemed to be University) Bengaluru Campus; Dr. Kiran Aithal, Director of R&D and Accreditation; Dr. Prashanth V., Controller of Examinations; and Dr. Sumashree S., First Year BTech Co-ordinator. The orientation concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Hitha D. Shetty, Dean of Students Welfare.
