Dubai: Medical graduates across the Gulf region now have a direct route to European specialty training through a new partnership between the UAE’s Thumbay Group and Romania’s George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Târgu MureÈ™ (UMFST).
The Thumbay–UMFST International Residency Pathway Program offers access to 49 accredited medical specialties aligned with European healthcare standards. Training spans 28 clinical, 13 surgical, and 8 paraclinical disciplines—including cardiology, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, and radiology—lasting four to six years depending on the specialty.
Under the agreement, clinical training will be conducted in UMFST’s university-affiliated teaching hospitals in Romania. Candidates can apply by ranking up to three specialty choices, with admissions priority given to graduates of Gulf Medical University and The Thumbay International Medicine Pathway Program. Uniquely, the pathway allows eligible candidates direct entry into residency directly following their MD, bypassing the requirement for a separate rotating internship.
Thumbay Group will serve as the regional admissions gateway, assisting applicants with enrollment, visa processing, orientation, career counseling, and required language preparation.

Prof. Dr. Leonard Azamfirei, Rector of UMFST, described the initiative as a long-term bridge in postgraduate medical education between the Gulf region and Europe.
