BENGALURU: In a significant step toward implementing the National Education Policy (NEP), the Government of India has appointed political scientist and academic administrator Prof. Sandeep Shastri as the Chairperson and Team Lead for drafting the new Political Science curriculum and textbooks for Grades 11 and 12.
Prof. Shastri currently serves as Vice President of Nitte (Deemed to be University) at its Bengaluru campus. Under his leadership, a national panel of subject matter experts will design revised learning materials tailored to the pedagogical framework outlined in the NEP.
Transforming Senior Secondary Education
The revised textbooks aim to move away from rote learning toward critical inquiry, conceptual clarity, and a deeper understanding of political systems, constitutional values, and global politics. The initiative forms part of the Union Ministry of Education’s broader curriculum revision exercise designed to align school learning across the country with contemporary educational priorities.
Academic leaders and institutional representatives have hailed the appointment as a notable achievement for Karnataka’s educational community and Nitte University.
"This responsibility reflects a shared commitment to elevating the standard of social science education across Indian schools," said an official connected to the university administration. "Prof. Shastri’s deep domain expertise and long-standing involvement in policy research make him ideally suited to lead this nationwide reform."

A respected political analyst, researcher, and educator, Prof. Shastri brings decades of experience in higher education, institutional governance, and comparative political studies. He has previously held prominent positions across major Indian universities and research networks, contributing extensively to electoral studies, governance models, and social science research.
The newly formed committee is expected to commence textbook drafting shortly, with rollout details and guidelines to follow under the national curriculum update schedule.
