MU: Bottikere Purushottama Poonja was commemorated, Book released
Mangalore: Yakshagana will not perish as this art is a symbol of worship, not played for money. When Yakshagana is safe, there is no danger for Kannada language and culture, opined Karnataka Yakshagana Academy President Dr. GL Hegade Kumata.
He spoke after releasing a commemorative book on Bottikere Purushottama Poonja, at an event jointly organised by Amburuha Yaksha Sadana Pratisthana Bottikere and Mangalore University Dr. P Dayananda Pai and P Satish Pai Yakshagana Study Centre, here at Managala Auditorium of Mangalore University, on Saturday. “Poonja’s literary knowledge and hold on play was amazing,” he added.
Artist Vishweshwar Bhat Sunnambala said, although Poonjaru was a great scholar, he used to listen and discuss with others without hesitation. He Bhagavatige was depended on the ability of the artist. He used to form new Prasangas or songs even within no time. He was appreciated by most of the contemporaries.
Yakshagana scholar Dr. Prabhakara Joshi said, Purushottama Poonja was a all-round talent. He is the ‘Dashavatari’ of Yakshagana, one of the greatest Yakshagana poets, an extraordinary artist and a great Yakshagana teacher. He is one among very few who maintained the dignity of the art even in Tulu Prasangas, he hailed.
Editor of the commemorative book, Bhaskara Rai Kukkuvalli, said that Purushottama Poonja's commemorative book is not a personal worship, it is a reference guide for those interested in art to read, he said. The publisher, Ajekaru Balakrishna Shetty, remembered the Poonja’s family, admirers and disciples who helped to prepare the book.
Representatives of Prasaranga, Kalagangothri and Gopalkrishna Yakshagana Sangh were felicitated. Kalluru Nagesh of 'Aakriti Prakashan' was honoured. Logo of Amburuha Yaksha Sadan Foundation was released by the dignitaries.
Karnataka Yakshagana Academy Member Kadri Navaneetha Shetty, Mangalore University Yakshagana Study Centre Director Sripati Kalluraya, Priest of Sri Vishnumurthy Janardhana Temple T. Subrahmanya Bhatt, President of Amburuha Yaksha Sadan Foundation Shobha Purushottama Poonja and others were present.
Sunil Pallamajalu and Sadashiva Alva Talpadi mastered the ceremony. Deevit Kotyan extended vote of thanks. Yakshagana Prasanga written by Bottikere Purushottama Poonja- ʼManishadaʼ was played by the artists.
