Indian Literature's Timeless Power Highlighted at Book Exhibition

Mangalore, August 12, 2025:  "The power of literature has no parallel," opined Dr. Mahaling Bhat, Dean, Language Department at St. Aloysius Deemed University, during the inauguration of a book exhibition organized by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, in collaboration with St. Aloysius Deemed University’s Konkani Institute and Vision Konkani. The event, held at the Sahodaya Auditorium, marks the centenary celebration of Konkani litterateur V.J.P. Saldanha and is part of a two-day national seminar.

Dr. Bhat emphasized India's rich linguistic and literary heritage, noting that while many countries have a single dominant language, India boasts thousands of languages, literatures, and cultures with over two millennia of history. "Beyond written books, India’s oral literary traditions are profound. Recognizing and publishing quality literature in 24 languages, and translating works across these languages, is no easy task. Yet, Sahitya Akademi has been doing this for decades," he said. He added that reading Sahitya Akademi’s series on Indian literary pioneers offers insights into historical social conditions, underscoring literature’s unparalleled influence.

The exhibition was inaugurated with opening remarks from poet Melvyn Rodrigues, Convenor, Konkani Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi , who delivered the introductory address. The event was moderated by H.M. Pernal, a member of the Konkani Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi who also offered a vote of thanks. Notable attendees included Ranganath from Sahitya Akademi’s Bengaluru Regional Office , Joachim Pinto, program coordinator from St. Aloysius Deemed University’s Konkani Institute, and Stany, Bela member of Konkani Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.

The book exhibition and sale, running from August 12 to August 14 at St. Aloysius College’s Sahodaya Auditorium, is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Books are available at special discounted rates, with additional concessions for students, educational institutions, and libraries of organizations. Over 350 titles in six languages—Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, English, Hindi, and Marathi—are available for sale.
