Do not forget to watch- Total Lunar Eclipse on 7th September 2025

The Earth will disrupt a Lunar Day and cause a Lunar Eclipse on the night of 7th September 2025 and early hours of 8th September 2025. The Moon will be engulfed entirely by Earth’s shadow and turn Copper Red in color around Midnight. This will be a Total Lunar Eclipse.

A Total Lunar Eclipse is caused when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow such that the entire Moon falls within the shadow of the Earth. During a Total Lunar Eclipse, Earth would entirely block the direct Sunlight on the Moon. However, light scattered by earth’s atmosphere, leads to the red light to fall on the Lunar surface and this reflected light would make the Moon appear Red in color.

Astronomers measure brightness in Magnitude scale – The lower the number, brighter the object. The Full Moon which is usually about -13 in magnitude, will appear very dim at a magnitude of -1.35. That means the Moon’s brightness will drop by 99.9%.

As the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon on 7th September, the fainter shadow called the Penumbra of the Earth falls on the Moon from 08:50pm. Earth’s penumbra will not be distinctly visible on the Lunar surface. At 09:57pm, the darker part of Earth’s shadow – The Umbra will begin appearing on the Lunar surface. At 11:00pm, the Moon will completely be in Earth’s Umbral Shadow and the eclipse will peak at 11:41pm. At 12:22am on 8th September, Earth’s umbra will recede from the Moon’s surface and the umbra will have completely exit the Moon’s surface by 01:26am. The eclipse will end at 02:25am on 8th September. The total eclipse will last for 5 hours 27 minutes with the totality lasting for 1 hour and 22 minutes.

The Eclipse will be visible from all all parts of India and almost all Asian Countries, like China, Mongolia, Central Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and all the south east-Asian and countries  in the Middle-East will witness entire or part of this eclipse. Eastern most countries of Africa and Australia will also witness  the Totality.

Astronomy enthusiasts from India can witness the entire eclipse safely without any harm. The total lunar eclipse is completely safe to view from naked eyes. Astronomers and enthusiasts hope for clear skies throughout the duration of the eclipse to view this event.
