Robotic Nephrectomy Brings Relief to Patient with Rare Kidney Condition

Bengaluru  Whitefield : A man, who was unaware that he had three kidneys since birth, had been suffering from severe pain in the left side of his abdomen and recurrent urinary infections for the past two years. At Medicover Hospitals, Whitefield, doctors successfully performed a surgery to remove the third kidney.

A scan revealed the rare condition of having two kidneys on the left side. The left kidney was split into two parts. The upper part was blocked at the urinary passage, which had caused it to become completely non-functional and swollen like a balloon, measuring nearly 10 cm. This was the reason behind the severe pain and repeated urinary infections.

Under the leadership of Dr. Pramod S, Robotic Urologist and Renal transplant surgeon, a team of doctors carried out a robotic nephrectomy to remove the damaged upper part of the kidney. During the procedure, the blood vessels of the healthy lower kidney were carefully preserved while the diseased upper part was removed.

The patient tolerated the surgery well and his post-operative recovery was smooth. He has now completely recovered.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Pramod S said:

“This was a rare and challenging case. With the help of robotic technology, we were able to perform the surgery with precision and preserve the healthy kidney. The patient will no longer suffer from repeated urinary infections and severe pain.”
