Surathkal: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, today commemorated the 123rd birth anniversary of its esteemed founder, the late Sri U. Srinivas Mallya. Originally established as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), now known as NITK, Sri Mallya is revered as the “Father of Modern Dakshina Kannada District.” His enduring vision and steadfast dedication have been the cornerstone of NITK’s growth and success.
Sri Mallya served an 18-year tenure as a member of Parliament, from 1946–1965. His vision led to the construction of the New Mangalore Port, Bajpe airport, National Highway 66, and most importantly, the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (now NITK).
On this auspicious occasion, respects were paid to the statue of Sri U. Srinivas Mallya at the NITK campus. The statue was garlanded by NITK Director, Prof. B. Ravi, along with functionaries, staff, alumni, and students at 9:00 AM today.
In the light of this significant occasion, esteemed NITK Director, Prof. B Ravi, extended his deepest respects and heartfelt sentiments. Sri Mallya’s contributions to the region and the nation have left an indelible mark, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
He was a philanthropist who donated generously to various causes such as education, health, social welfare, and religious activities. He also supported the promotion of Gandhiji’s programmes like Khadi and Village Industries, entry of Dalits to temples, eradication of untouchability etc.
