Surathkal: In a landmark step toward digital inclusion, engineers from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, have successfully deployed 100 internet connections across Agumbe, a region renowned for its biodiversity, heavy rainfall, and challenging terrain. The initiative, titled “Promoting HEALTH in Agumbe”—an acronym for Healthcare, Education, Agriculture, Livelihood, Technology, and Heritage—was led by Dr. Mohit P. Tahiliani, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, NITK and Past Chair (2023) of IEEE Mangalore Subsection.
Funded by the IEEE Communication Society and IEEE Tech4Good (T4G) under their “Internet for All” program, the project has transformed digital access in one of India’s most ecologically sensitive regions. Despite frequent power disruptions and hilly terrain, the team enabled reliable internet connectivity for key institutions and households across Agumbe, including the gram panchayat office, hospitals, schools, police station, ration society, cobra research centres, anti-poaching posts, restaurants, homestays, and individual homes.
The deployment was completed on November 8, 2025, and executed by Dr. Tahiliani, Ms. Deepa Kumari (PhD scholar), and a dedicated team of faculty members and students from IEEE Mangalore Subsection. The project was facilitated by IEEE Mangalore Subsection, which operates under the IEEE Bangalore Section.
This connectivity leap has enabled UPI payments and digital transactions for local businesses and residents, supported remote healthcare consultations and digital health records, expanded access to online learning platforms for students and teachers, and facilitated research collaboration for Agumbe’s renowned conservation centres. It has also boosted tourism and local commerce through online visibility and booking systems, and encouraged reverse migration, with families returning to Agumbe due to improved infrastructure and opportunities.
“Our goal was to make digital access a reality for every stakeholder in Agumbe—from schoolchildren to researchers studying King Cobras. Reliable internet is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity for inclusive development,” said Dr. Mohit P. Tahiliani.
