Mangaluru: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, Mangaluru celebrated its 23rd Annual Convocation on Saturday, 15th November, 2025 at the New Sports Complex in NITK campus. A total of 935 B.Tech., 641 M.Tech., 23 M.Tech. (Research), 66 MCA, 69 MBA, 68 M.Sc., and 193 Ph.D. degrees were awarded. The number of PhDs awarded is the highest so far.
The event was graced by Shri Kamal Bali, President and Managing Director of Volvo Group, India; former Chairperson of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), South India; and member of the BoG of several academic institutes. In his Convocation address, he highlighted the vision of Viksit Bharat, and the role of the graduating students. “However, the world is shifting rapidly, big powers are competing, globalization is regressing to regionalism, and AI is disrupting many sectors,” he said. He advised students to think about ‘holistic sustainability’, which is economically efficient, environmentally-friendly, inclusive (gender, societal), and moral & ethical. He urged them to explore innovation, entrepreneurship, excellence in quality, and to take pride in being an Indian.
“There is a need for genuine leaders in academia and industry who will drive transformation. NITK has all the necessary ingredients and is taking the right steps to drive meaningful and long-term partnerships with alumni and industry,” Shri Kamal Bali observed.
The Director Prof. B. Ravi read out the Director’s report, highlighting the progress of the Institute in terms of infrastructure, faculty, research, staff, administration, academic activities, major events, etc. He shared the significant and rapid progress in innovation and entrepreneurship activities, including new policies, training programs, patent filing, technology licensing, and success stories of NITK startups such as BHive, Chai Point, Delhivery, Practo and Robosoft. He thanked the BoG Chairperson (Shri B.V.R. Mohan Reddy) and BoG members, Senators, Deans, HoDs, faculty and staff members for their dedication and support for the Institute.
In recognition of their academic excellence, 10 B.Tech. and 31 postgraduate students received Institute Gold Medals and medals sponsored by external agencies for securing the highest grades in their respective programs. These were given out by the Chief Guest and Director.
Out of 1995 students who were conferred the degrees, 1455 attended the event in person, along with 1885 parents. Given the large number of degrees, and that all students wanted to receive them in person at the main venue, as well as the parents who wanted to be present, it became a challenge to manage the overall event and limit its duration. In an exemplary display of novelty and coordination, NITK organized four mini-stages and the degrees were given in parallel streams by one of the Deans and the respective Heads of Departments. In this way, 1455 degrees were handed out in just over an hour, setting a new record.
The campus was bathed in festive colourful lights and the students gathered around selfie-points, reminiscing about their time spent in the campus over the last few years, and promising to keep meeting each other year after year. Director Ravi congratulated and wished them successful careers as well as meaningful lives ahead. “As your alma mater, the gates of NITK will always be open for you, and we will be happy to welcome you to your second home any time,” he added.
Many parents were as nostalgic as their wards. Shri M.R. Naik (IPS), IG, SSB Delhi said “Feeling proud as a parent today - my daughter officially received her B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Compliments to NIT Karnataka, Surathkal, for a beautifully organised ceremony.
