Bengaluru: Doctors at Medicover Hospitals have observed a noticeable increase in stroke cases during the winter season. Medical experts state that cold weather can significantly raise the risk of stroke, particularly among elderly individuals and people with existing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Dr. Kushal, Head of Emergency Services (ER), Medicover Hospitals, explained that cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, leading to a sudden rise in blood pressure. “During winter, we see more patients arriving at the emergency department with symptoms of stroke. Increased blood pressure and delayed response to warning signs are major reasons for this seasonal rise,” he said.
Dr. Nithya, Head of Intensive Care Unit (ICU), highlighted that winter-related dehydration and infections play a critical role. “People tend to drink less water during colder months, which thickens the blood and increases the chances of clot formation. Respiratory infections and flu can further increase inflammation, making patients more vulnerable to stroke,” she explained.
Krishnamurthy, Hospital Head, Medicover Hospitals, emphasized the importance of early medical intervention. “Stroke is a medical emergency. Reaching the hospital within the golden hour can save lives and reduce long-term disability. Public awareness and timely treatment are key to improving outcomes,” he said.
Doctors advised the public to monitor blood pressure regularly, stay adequately hydrated, avoid sudden exposure to extreme cold, continue prescribed medications, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as facial drooping, weakness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, or sudden loss of vision occur.
