Over 850 athletes from 30 premier institutes competed in Badminton, Basketball, and Ball Badminton
Surathkal, January 10, 2026: The 26th All India Inter-NIT (AIINIT) Sports Meet 2025–26 was successfully hosted by the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, from January 9 to 11, 2026. The national-level sporting event witnessed the participation of over 850 student athletes from 29 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and IIEST Shibpur, representing a total of 30 premier technical institutions across the country.
Competitions were conducted in Badminton, Basketball, and Ball Badminton at the NITK Surathkal Sports Complex, drawing enthusiastic participation and showcasing high standards of sportsmanship and athletic performance.
The Inaugural Ceremony was held on January 9, 2026, at 5:30 PM at the Basketball Court premises on the NITK campus. The ceremony was graced by Ms. Dhanalakshmi Poojary, Indian World Cup Kabaddi player, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Ashok Poovaiah, International Badminton player, as the Guest of Honour. The event was presided over by Prof. B. Ravi, Director, NITK Surathkal.
Also present on the occasion were Prof. Govinda Raj Madela, Dean (Students’ Welfare); Dr. Hem Prasad Nath, Senior SAS Officer and Organizing Secretary; Dr. Manoj and Mr. Akshay Korol, SAS Officers; along with faculty members, staff, students, and other dignitaries. Dr. Anidev Singh, SAS Officer, NIT Delhi, attended the ceremony as the Neutral Observer appointed by the NIT Sports Board.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Dhanalakshmi Poojary shared her inspiring journey, recalling how she overcame multiple injuries and surgeries over a span of fifteen years to achieve her dream of representing India. She encouraged students to persevere through setbacks, view failures as learning opportunities, and highlighted the growing professional avenues available in sports in India.
Mr. Ashok Poovaiah, in his address, emphasized that sports were not merely about winning but also about cultivating discipline, resilience, and physical fitness. He reflected on the challenges and failures that shaped his career and urged young athletes to remain humble in success and committed to their goals.
In his presidential address, Prof. B. Ravi, Director, NITK Surathkal, thanked all participating institutions and remarked that the true essence of such sporting events lay in participation, camaraderie, and the lasting friendships formed. He highlighted NITK’s integrated approach to sports education, wherein sports activities were embedded into the academic timetable with evaluation and grading systems. He also underscored the growing importance of sports science, technology, and artificial intelligence in enhancing athletic performance and encouraged students to explore sports analytics as an emerging field of innovation.
The AIINIT Sports Meet concluded on a successful note, reinforcing the spirit of unity, healthy competition, and sporting excellence among India’s leading technical institutions.
