Udupi: In a remarkable display of civic responsibility and youth leadership, a Class VI student from Udupi has written directly to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka after identifying a dangerous pothole that poses a serious risk to public safety.
Master Deepen Deepak Shenoy, a student of Mukunda Kripa School, Udupi (a unit of the Academy of General Education, Manipal), brought the issue to official attention after noticing a large, open pothole near a small bridge on the road connecting Diana Theatre to MGM Budnar Road. The stretch is heavily used by schoolchildren, senior citizens, morning walkers, two-wheelers, cars, and public buses.
According to residents, the pothole is deep and completely unprotected, with no barricades, warning signs, or safety markings, making it especially hazardous during early mornings, evenings, and rainy conditions. Locals say the damaged road has been a long-standing concern and has narrowly avoided serious accidents on several occasions.
Deepen, an active member of the Bharat Scouts & Guides, Udupi Wing, noticed the hazard while returning from school. Having recently participated in a District Leadership Training Camp, he felt morally compelled to act in line with the Scout motto “Be Prepared” and the organisation’s emphasis on duty to society.
Demonstrating initiative beyond his years, the student documented the pothole with photographs and submitted a formal representation to the Chief Minister, urging immediate action by the concerned authorities. Notably, the effort was made without seeking personal recognition or publicity.
Local residents have welcomed the young student’s intervention, stating that his action has finally drawn attention to a serious public safety issue that had gone unresolved.
Master Deepen’s initiative stands as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to responsible citizenship, and that values-based leadership training can empower young people to take meaningful action to protect their communities and help prevent potential tragedies.
