Silent Skin Damage in Winter: Children at Higher Risk Than Adults, Doctors Warn

Bengaluru, Whitefield: Although winter is considered a comfortable season, doctors warn that cold weather can silently damage the skin without obvious symptoms. These problems develop gradually and often come to attention only when they reach a severe stage.

According to Dr. Rajitha Alluri, Dermatologist at Medicover Hospital, low humidity, cold winds, frequent hot water baths, room heaters, and prolonged air-conditioned indoor environments weaken the skin’s natural protective barrier. “Ignoring mild itching or skin flaking as normal can later lead to eczema, dermatitis, skin infections, and painful cracks,” she cautions.

Doctors state that children’s skin gets damaged faster than adult skin during winter. Dr. Leentha Reddy, Pediatrician, explains that children have a thinner skin barrier that loses moisture quickly. “Parents often delay treatment thinking dryness is normal, but untreated skin dryness can lead to infections, cracked lips, and worsening allergic skin conditions,” she says.

School-going children are at higher risk due to cold exposure, dry classrooms, frequent handwashing, and the use of harsh soaps and sanitizers. Infants and toddlers are even more vulnerable because of their sensitive skin.

Doctors advise regular use of moisturizers, avoiding excessive hot water baths, using mild cleansers, maintaining good hydration, and seeking early medical consultation to prevent serious winter skin problems.
