St Aloysius University Hosts International Conference on Peaceful and Inclusive Societies

Mangaluru: St Aloysius (Deemed-to-be-University) organised a two-day international conference on “Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development” at LF Rasquinha Hall on January 28, with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16).

Inaugurating the conference, Mr Darshan H V, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, emphasised that peace and harmony in society are deeply rooted in inclusivity and impartial governance. “Fairness in decision-making is the cornerstone of harmonious societies,” he said, urging the youth to adopt inclusive and sustainable mindsets. He also highlighted the importance of green energy, electric vehicles, and proper waste segregation as essential components of responsible human development.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Shanthie M D’Souza, Founder and President of the Mantraya Institute of Strategic Studies (MISS), on the theme “Peaceful and Inclusive Societies.” Drawing attention to rising global conflicts, she underscored the relevance of SDG 16 and stressed that its effective implementation requires a multi-actor approach involving governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organisations.

Presiding over the inaugural session, Rev Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ, Chancellor of St Aloysius University, highlighted the inseparable link between peace and justice. He observed that inclusive institutions cannot be built on hope alone but require sustained commitment, ethical leadership, and a strong foundation of justice.

The international conference is being organised in collaboration with Sophia University, Japan; SUNY Cortland, USA; and the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, Brazil. It has attracted academicians, researchers, and students from various institutions.

Mr Alwin D’Souza, Convenor of the conference, welcomed the gathering and outlined its objectives. Dr Rose Veera D’Souza, Dean, presented the concept note, highlighting the significance of SDG 16 and the themes of the paper presentations. Mr Gavin Veigas, Student Convenor, led the participants in a pledge reaffirming their commitment to peace and inclusive development.

The programme was compered by Iola D’Mello, a third-year BA student, while Ms Kavitha B., Assistant Professor, proposed the vote of thanks.
