Art Therapy Can Heal Mind and Build Confidence, Says Ashwathi Subramanian at NMIT

Bengaluru: Art plays a vital role in human life and can serve as a form of healing regardless of one’s profession, said Ashwathi Subramanian, an internationally certified Mindfulness Life Coach and Art Therapist, during the International Women’s Day celebration organised by the Women’s Cell ‘AARA’ at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, a constituent of Nitte (Deemed to be University).

Delivering the inaugural address, Subramanian emphasised that art therapy has emerged as a recognised mental health discipline that integrates psychotherapy with visual art practices. According to her, the approach helps individuals process emotions, reduce anxiety, improve self-esteem, support trauma recovery, and enhance cognitive functioning.

Reflecting on her personal journey, she said her professional life had been shaped by numerous challenges, hardships, and even a near-death experience. She noted that mindfulness practices and creative expression helped her navigate these difficult phases and inspired her to work towards uplifting society.

Subramanian also shared that she has been living with a rare neurodegenerative condition that has left her permanently dependent on a wheelchair. However, she said her background as a dedicated Bharatanatyam dancer before the onset of the condition helped her develop resilience and face life’s challenges with determination.

During the session, she conducted a brief demonstration of art therapy techniques and encouraged both women and men to cultivate an interest in visual arts, highlighting their therapeutic value in maintaining mental well-being.

Earlier, Dr. Nalini N., Chairperson of the Women’s Cell ‘AARA’, welcomed the gathering and presented an overview of the cell’s year-long activities. The event was presided over by Dr. H.C. Nagaraj, Principal of NMIT.

Among those present were Dr. J. Sudheer Reddy, Director of Curriculum Development and Academics at NMIT; Dr. Hitha D. Shetty, Dean of Students Welfare; and Monika Rani H.G., Convenor of AARA.

The programme concluded with cultural performances by female students, which were warmly received by the audience.
