Puttur: World Environment Day was observed with great enthusiasm and a strong commitment to environmental conservation at St. Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur. The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Botany, Department of Zoology, and the Eco Club of the college.
The event featured Dr Vinayaka K. S. as the resource person. In his address, he highlighted the growing environmental challenges posed by microplastic pollution and emphasized the urgent need for sustainable development to safeguard the environment. He shed light on the serious yet often overlooked issue of microplastics and their far-reaching impact on ecosystems and human health.
Presiding over the programme, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro expressed concern over the increasing materialistic tendencies among the younger generation. In his presidential address, he advised students to prioritize values and meaningful living over the pursuit of wealth. He also encouraged them to draw inspiration from environmental icons such as Saalumarada Thimmakka, whose lifelong commitment to tree planting continues to inspire society.
Adding significance to the occasion, Sandeep Shetty Ariyadka donated a sapling of the RR-38 variety of jackfruit tree. The sapling was ceremonially planted on the college campus as a symbol of the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Dr Vinayachandra, Registrar of Evaluation actively participated in planting the saplings.
The programme commenced with a prayer rendered by Ms. Rachana and Ms. Akhila. Nifana welcomed the gathering, while Mr. Yagnesh proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Ms. Hiba Sheikh.
Following the formal programme, students actively participated in a tree-planting drive on the campus, reaffirming their commitment to building a greener and more sustainable environment.
The observance of World Environment Day not only raised awareness about pressing environmental issues such as microplastic pollution but also inspired students to take practical steps towards environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
