BENGALURU: Sumanth Kamath, an alumnus of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), Bengaluru, has earned international recognition for identifying a critical security vulnerability in Boston’s public transportation payment infrastructure.
The achievement has drawn high praise from both Boston University and Nitte University, celebrating his contribution to ethical cybersecurity and public safety.
Kamath, who graduated in Information Science and Engineering from NMIT (2020–2024 batch), is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Data Science at Boston University. Working alongside co-researcher Damodar Pai, Kamath discovered a major design flaw in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) "Tap-to-Pay" fare collection system.
Their research revealed that the flaw permitted commuters to access transit services even when payment authorization failed. The gap stemmed from complex challenges in modern contactless payment systems, where high-speed transaction processing and tokenized digital wallets can occasionally bypass real-time verification.
Boston University praised the duo's research as a prime model of academic work strengthening public digital infrastructure. Rather than exploiting the vulnerability, the researchers responsibly disclosed the flaw directly to the MBTA, providing actionable insights into how transit agencies, financial institutions, and technology vendors can better coordinate system protocols.
"Public transit systems depend on ticket revenue," Kamath said, reflecting on his decision. "By responsibly disclosing the vulnerability in this 'tap-to-pay' system to the MBTA through our research, we followed the principles of ethical cybersecurity."
Celebrating the milestone, Rohit Punja, Trustee of Nitte Education Trust, extended his hearty congratulations and wished Kamath continued success in data science, cybersecurity, and technological innovation. The Nitte family noted that Kamath’s journey—from NMIT classrooms to refining major overseas infrastructure—serves as an inspiration to young engineers worldwide.
