SURATHKAL, KARNATAKA: Hundreds of alumni of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, reassembled on campus to mark the institute’s 67th Foundation Day on August 8. Among those attending were over 100 members of the 1981 graduating class, accompanied by their families, who marked the occasion with the handover of a sustainable campus mobility project.
As part of the celebrations, the 1981 batch formally presented two electric buggies to the institute under "CAMPUS 81" (Collaborative Alumni Mobility Partnership for University Sustainability). Developed with an investment of ₹17 lakh, the project is an initiative under the broader CAMP ("Contribute to Alma Mater Projects") programme, which was launched by the batch in 2018.
The project introduces an eco-friendly transport system powered by a dedicated solar charging station. Designed to support senior citizens, campus visitors, alumni, students, and individuals requiring mobility assistance, the buggies operate alongside an integrated GPS-enabled tour and information system designed to navigate newcomers around the campus.
Designed, fabricated, and led by Dr. Pruthviraj U., Associate Professor and Project Coordinator for CAMPUS 81, the initiative was executed through a collaboration involving the Centre for System Design (CSD) and the System for Emergency Assistance, Response & Communication Hub (SEARCH).
The handover ceremony was attended by Prof. B. Ravi, Director of NITK Surathkal; Prof. Venkapayya Desai, Director of IIT Dharwad; Prof. Prasanna Belur D., Dean of Alumni & Corporate Relations; Dr. Pruthviraj U.; alongside representatives from various graduating classes.
Institute officials highlighted that the solar-powered mobility network directly supports NITK’s ongoing efforts toward achieving a net-zero, sustainable campus.
